The word apostle carries the meaning of a ship or group of ships that are sent out on a marine expedition. For example, the “Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria”, were three ships sent from Spain to discover new lands. It can also be applied to the leader of such an expedition.
The apostles (Jewish men) abandoned everything to follow Jesus. They took no provisions for their journeys, received no pay, and were, for the most part, common and uneducated men. (Mt 19:27; Lk 9:3-5; Mt 10:8; Ac 4:13).
