Lucifer: Created, Fallen, Defeated

That’s a good question because it reminds us of something we have emphasized throughout this study: Satan is a created being. Many people think of God and Satan as opposing forces that have always existed, but the Bible never presents Satan that way. God is eternal. Satan is not. Satan had a beginning because Satan was created by God.

So where does the Bible describe Lucifer’s creation?

The interesting thing is that Scripture never records the creation of Lucifer in the same way it records the creation of Adam and Eve. There is no verse that says, “On this day God created Lucifer.” If we are looking for that kind of detailed account, we simply will not find it.

However, the Bible does tell us several important things.

The clearest statement appears in Ezekiel 28:15:

“Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”

Notice why that verse matters. Ezekiel does not merely describe Lucifer’s character before his fall. He tells us that Lucifer was created. That one word immediately separates Satan from God. God is uncreated and eternal. Lucifer is created and dependent upon God for his existence.

Now that raises another question.

If Lucifer was created, when was he created?

To answer that, we need to compare Scripture with Scripture.

Colossians 1:16 tells us:

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible...”

Paul’s point is that Christ created everything that exists. That includes the visible world and the invisible world. It includes humanity, the physical universe, and the angelic realm. Lucifer, before his fall, was part of that created angelic host.

But can we narrow the timing down any further?

Job 38 provides an interesting clue. As God questions Job, He asks:

“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth... When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4, 7)

Many conservative Bible scholars understand the phrase “sons of God” in this passage to refer to angels.

If that interpretation is correct, what does it tell us?

It tells us that angels already existed when God laid the foundations of the earth. They were present to witness God’s creative work and rejoice in it.

John Walvoord pointed to Job 38 as evidence that the angels were created before or very early in the creation of the earth. Charles Ryrie reached a similar conclusion, noting that the angels appear as observers of creation rather than part of the earthly creation account itself.

Now let’s be careful.

Does Job 38 tell us exactly when the angels were created?

No.

Does it tell us they existed when God laid the foundations of the earth?

Yes.

That distinction is important because it teaches us another principle of Bible study. Sometimes Scripture gives us enough information to reach a conclusion without providing every detail we might like to know.

So what conclusion should we draw?

The Bible clearly teaches that Lucifer was created by God. Ezekiel 28:15 explicitly states that he was created, and Colossians 1:16 places him within the created angelic realm. While Scripture does not reveal the exact moment of his creation, Job 38 strongly suggests that the angels were already in existence when God laid the foundations of the earth.

One of the most important truths to remember is that Satan is not God’s equal. The fact that Lucifer was created means he is a creature, not a rival deity. That truth stands at the foundation of everything the Bible teaches about Satan. He may be powerful, but he remains a created being accountable to his Creator.
